Richard Schmidt Obituary

Dick Schmidt, 83, of Laurel, died at Horizon Hospice House of prostate cancer on February 1, 2010. He was born August 20, 1926, the fifth of ten children to Gottfred and Ottilia Schmidt in Mildred, MT. Dick graduated from High School in Ismay in 1945. He enterd the Army in May 1945 and served in Europe with a special services unit as part of the Allied Control Authority of the Demobilization Operation. He was honorably discharged in 1947. Dick married Joyce Higgins December 24, 1945 in Baker,MT during one of his furloughs. They had three daughters, Glria, Marilyn and Nancy. Dick graduated from Rocky Mountain College in 1954 and received his Masters Degree in School Administration in 1959 from Colorado State Teachers College, Greeley, CO. Dick coached all sports for 6 years at Rosebud High School, 4 years at Terry High School and BB and track for 4 years at Baker High School. In 1968 he took the position of Superintendent for 8 years at Moore Public Schools. He completed his educational career as Superintendent of the Park City Public Schools in 1982. Dick became a real estate agent in 1980, retiring in 2008. He enjoyed golf, bowling, bridge and being a great-grandfather. Mr. Schmidt is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Thomas and Gotthilf; and a grandson, Chris. He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughters Gloria, Marilyn (Tim) and Nancy (Rich); five grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; siblings Ed, Leonard, Alvin, Loranine, Edna, Meriam and Eldora. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday February 4, 2010 at the United Methodist Church of Laurel. Interment will be at Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Dick's name to Riverstone Hospice or the Laurel Golf Coarse.
