Pat L. Hoagland, 69, born in Miles City, Montana on July 6, 1946, passed away on June 8th, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and deeply loved. Pat is the kind of man that you can never ever forget. His warm smile, generous heart and sense of humor are just a few of the things that we all have appreciated about him.
Pat was raised in Terry, Montana and graduated there from Terry High School, after which he attended Miles Community College. Pat entered the Navy, as a young man, and served in Viet Nam on the River Boat Patrol. He was awarded a medal of valor for his extraordinary service.
Pat then returned to Terry and operated the Sage N Cedar Dairy for many years. The infamous milk truck that he drove was well known around town and was occasionally used for after-hours revelry. In his later years, Pat was a Flag man for a private highway road construction company. In this role, he acquired the title, "The candy man" due to the fact that he distributed jolly ranchers to those, in their cars, who were waiting in line. He even went so far as to have doggie treats for those who were traveling with pets.
Pat spent a lot of his free time gardening, canning & preserving the produce, baking sourdough bread and generously sharing all of it with family and friends. Pat spent countless leisure hours playing poker, pitch and cribbage. He really enjoyed having a cold beer and hanging out with various friends or relatives. He was always there to listen and show that he cared... ... .and he loved a good laugh!
Pat also really loved music, especially country and classic rock. He was an incredible brother, uncle, cousin and friend, and THE MOST kind, caring, generous person you could ever have the privilege to know. His smile spoke volumes.
Many family members fondly recall Pat nudging them in the wee hours of the morning saying, "Time to get up... ..milk route!" Whatever kind of beverages people want up in heaven... we're sure he's busy delivering them even now.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Esther Hoagland of Terry, Montana, and his brother Harley Hoagland and survived by Harley's wife, (Ruth). Other surviving relatives include: sister, Dixie Cannon (Lacy); brother, Mike Hoagland (Adele); and brother, Kelly Hoagland (Penni).
A graveside, military service will take place on Saturday, July 9th, 11:00am, at the Prairie County Cemetery in Terry, Montana. Following the graveside service, a celebration of Pat's life will take place at the American Legion Club.
Memorial gifts may be made to the American Legion or to the American Cancer Society.
