Norman "Gene" Eugene Yates

Gene was born Norman Eugene Yates on December 30, 1953 in Bismarck, Missouri. He was the fifth child of John Charles and Edith (Stroup) Yates, in a family that would eventually grow to have sixteen children. Even as a young child, his life centered around babies. He loved to rock, so his mother would take a dish towel and tie his newest sibling in his lap and he would rock them. For 61 years, there was nothing that gave him more joy than to be interacting with a child. At the age of 17, Gene joined the United States Navy and served on the USS Vegas, furnishing supplies to Vietnam for our troops. He served 2 years of duty, then went to work for the government as a hydraulic mechanic at North Island, San Diego. Eventually expanding his knowledge and position to be able to fly around the world to military bases to troubleshoot problems with Naval aircraft. It was early in the part of his life that he met and married Ann Cleary Callahan on March 23, 1973 and they became the very proud parents of three daughters. Following a car accident in 1987, Gene was not able to continue in his career and the family returned home to Missouri and they later divorced. In 1999, Gene met Audrey Schock. One of the first things Gene said to Audrey was that he was a marrying kind of man! They married June 27, 1999. Gene taught us all the true meaning of the phrase, "Live, laugh and love" . Memorial Services will be 11:00am Tuesday November 10, 2015 at Remington Letcher Chapel.
