Herman Fox, 96, longtime Billings resident died peacefully with his wife Irene at his side July 20, 2013 at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive. Herman was born in Laurel November 2, 1916 to Philip and Mary Elizabeth (Frank) Fox, growing up on the family sugar beet farm near Laurel. He met the love of his life, Irene Hebner and married Irene Febraury23, 1941 in Park City. With the onslaught of WWII, Herman joined the United States Army, serving in the South Pacific. In April 1945 Herman demonstrated exemplary action in ground combat and was awarded the Bronze Star. Later in action in northern Luzon, Philippine Islands in June 1945, he eliminated an enemy machine gun, single-handed and was awarded the Silver Star. After his honorable discharge, Herman returned to Laurel to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad and O.M. Wold International Harvester as a mechanic. Herman could fix anything! He built the family home including the electrical and plumbing as time and funding allowed. He enjoyed hunting and was a charter member of the Yellowstone Rifle Club and won many shooting contests. He also liked to camp and fish. Herman is survived by his wife of 72 years, Irene; children Herman Richard Fox, Mary Elizabeth (Jon) Mill and Victoria Susan Fox; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held 11:00am Monday July 29, 2013 at the Rock Church of Laurel.
