George Madden Obituary

Dr. George R. Madden, 80,formerly of Laurel passed away December 2, 2007 in Red Lodge. George was born on Feb, 24, 1927 in Rochester, Michigan to Charles and Eva Madden, one of ten children. He graduated from High School in Rochester and later enlisted in the Army in following in the footsteps of his older brothers who bravely served during the second World War. George attended college in Detroit, earned his Masters degree in Illinois and his Doctorate in Kentucky. He married Virginia Kage in 1949, together they raised four sons.

In 1970 the family moved to Billings as George took a professorship at Eastern Montana College in the Education department. He remained there until his retirement in 2005, soon after moving to Laurel.

George was committed to the training of teachers and became especially interested in educational law. Many teachers who passed through the education department at EMC and then later Montana State University-Billings between 1970 and 2005 had the privilege of having Dr. Madden as a professor. In 2006, Montana State University - Billings awarded George the honor of Professor Emeritus. He was the creator and editor for a publication called "The Montana Professor".

George was a long time fly-fishing enthusiast and spent many hours on the Stillwater River with his son, John, who preceded him in death in 2000. He loved the beautiful Stillwater Valley and the towering Beartooth Mountains and realized a dream of owning a piece Montana heaven near Fishtail.

He is survived by sons: Ted (Carol) of Seattle; Phil Madden, Laurel; daughter-in-law Liz Madden; and thirteen grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by both his parents; wife Virginia; sons Chuck and John; brothers Ed and John, sisters Sis, Ceil, Mary and Eva.

We are sure there is much hugging, laughing, and fishing going on as our beloved "Doc" is reunited with those loved ones that have passed before.

Visitation will be Weds. 2 - 9pm at the Remington Letcher Funeral Chapel located at 420 19th Avenue West (Golf Coarse Road) Laurel.
