Alice V. Hammer, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great- great grandmother passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2015. Alice was born February 15, 1923, in Thief River Falls, Minn, the daughter of Tilda and Albert Sevre. She was gifted musically, from early childhood, as she accompanied her father's fiddle music by playing an old pump organ. Alice started elementary school speaking only Norwegian. She entertained her family with many interesting stories about the adventures of surviving the horse and sleigh rides to and from her rural country school house. She had an amazing way with all animals and was always surrounded by dogs. As a young girl, she saved an entire litter of injured piglets by sewing up their injuries with a darning needle and store string. Upon the sale of the family farm, to avoid sale of her beloved stacker horse, she slipped away into the woods on horseback and hid out until the sale was over. May 1, 1945, she married Herbert R. Hammer. Together they had a daughter and a son. Herbert's employment took them to various locations before eventually settling in Laurel in 1961. Alice, affectionately known as "Nanny", was an awesome cook and was known for her amazing Lefse which had a habit of disappearing immediately fresh off the griddle! She took pride in her 101 percent Norwegian heritage and worked at teaching us traditional table prayers and other miscellaneous sayings. Alice was also known for her rousing renditions of Ole and Lena jokes which we will fondly miss. She loved camping and enjoyed day rides in the mountains with family. Together they spent many summer days exploring, rock hounding, and picnicking. Nanny also entertained us by playing mean honky tonk piano riffs and gospel hymns. Her husband; parents; brothers, Gene, Harry, George and Sam; sisters, Myrtle and Doris, preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughter, Marlene (Steve) Alarcon and son, Darwin Hammer; granddaughters, Christina and Jolyn Temple,Jami Fitchner, Jennifer (Ramon) Paredes, Julie (Cornelius) Mitchell; great grandchildren, Ty (Johnette) and Kati (Nick)Wetch, Isiac Hammer, Jarit and Eli Fitchner, Angelica Socorro Paredes, Araceli Paredes, Bryam Hernandez, Amber and Delonne Hamilton and Mario Pacheco; great-great grandsons, Andreas and Liam Wetch.. Graveside Services will be 11:00am Monday June 15, 2015 at the Laurel Cemetery
